On paper, a musical about Endometriosis shouldn’t work. It’s a serious medical condition that affects 1 in 7 women worldwide, yet for something so crippling, it takes on average a decade to diagnose. Yet Maria Bartholdi’s Book with Kristin Stowell’s music and lyrics lean into Broadway conventions with a hyper-comic production that captivates from its first moments.
The choice to use stock business characters in an office is inspired. With Jane Smith (Sarah Hinrichson) stepping up to deliver the big presentation after Brad was mauled by a bear (seriously), only to be betrayed by her excruciating period.
The cast are exceptional singers, with great comic timing, and the musical numbers are sophisticated. Nikki Mirza’s direction gives echoes of Book Of Mormon, respecting musical tradition but adding a satirical knowing element that’s delicious.
With all great satires, there’s an important message. The section where Jane is seeking medical help is the strongest part of the show, being fobbed off by doctor after doctor, was met with knowing nods from some in the audience.
There was an earnestness at the climax of the show, where Jane finally gets her diagnosis, and it’s handled deftly. It’s a well-produced slick fringe musical, hilarious and with great songs. (Oh and pussy porridge deserves a special mention!!!)
Endometriosis: The Musical is on at Doonstairs at Gilded Balloon Patter House until August 31st
