★★★★
When I see “audience interaction” in a show description, I’m often apprehensive, but within minutes, Lizzy Lenco had me wearing knickers on my head and talking about my poo in front of everyone, and it felt great. Putting the crowd at such ease allowed Lenco to dive into the details of how a car accident left her visually impaired and with a life-changing brain injury.
One would think the subject matter should make this a heavy and hard-hitting show, but Lenco’s brilliant dark humour makes it fun and hilarious, and helps us to engage with the reality of such a horrific incident. The focus, however, is more on how Lenco has adapted to her new circumstances, and her defiance in remaining a metal-head goth in the face of a near death experience.
Despite numerous venue-related interruptions beyond her control, Lenco easily kept her flow, and the hour zipped by. A myriad of weird and wonderful topics was touched upon, from cake to sex toys. She even snuck in some clever digs at capitalism and body shaming, and justly berated society for the way we talk about disabled people.
Full Frontal Lobe is an intelligent and honest look at some topics we ought not to shy away from talking about just because they are unpleasant. Though the faint of heart might struggle to cope with some elements of the show, I’d still encourage them to see it, but perhaps that’s because I share Lenco’s dark sense of humour.
Full Frontal Lobe is on at Brewhouse Doghouse Hotel until the 25th August
