Have you ever been to a Fringe show that starts with the narration from an infamous Autism Speaks video remixed with Metallica? Neither had I before going to see Joe Wells’ ‘Daddy Autism’ at Banshee Labyrinth on a quiet Wednesday afternoon. A bold start for a thought-provoking show exploring Joe’s journey to parenthood.
Throughout this hour-long show, Joe ponders about his upcoming role as “Dad” in a society that feels like it’s crumbling. Reflecting on his own relationship with his dad, Wells uses a comedic lens to explore the type of dad he wants to be for his child. He reflects on conformity, gender norms, inaccessibility in society and – of course – the enduring battle between Kendrick Lamar and Drake in ways that are as informative as they are comedic.
He shares the feedback his mother-in-law told him after catching his preview where she advised he “told a funnier joke after one that isn’t as successful to win the audience back”. During the few moments where the audience pondered the deeper meaning of some of the topics discussed, Joe instinctively knew when to take her advice and get everyone laughing.
Joe Wells masterfully balances being educational and relatable to a neurodiverse audience. Regardless of your neurotype, Joe finds a way to bring everyone together in harmony, which is very rare indeed. One to watch as part of the Free Fringe.
