QuickFire Questions: Amy Mason

QuickFire Questions: Amy Mason

We were delighted to ask stand-up Amy Mason some questions ahead of her debut hour at the Edinburgh Fringe, the Funny Women Award finalist was incredibly candid in her answers.

Why did you make this show?

I am very good at laughing about thorny stuff and I felt like I had a lot to talk about that might resonate with people. Also, I like showing off. I broke up with my ex-husband during lockdown and I finally felt like I wanted to get out into the world and start performing again. It’s been exciting rediscovering who I am while making the show. Sounds a bit cheesy but it’s true, sadly.

What is the part of the show you’re most proud of?

I have some jokes about having bipolar disorder that I’m really proud of. Audiences can go quiet when you mention mental illness so making them feel safe is important, without diminishing your experience. It can be hard. It’s not a massive bit of the show, but it is important.

As a disabled practitioner, what do you want to see change at The Edinburgh Fringe?

I’d love more focus on shorter runs and days off, maybe even for the whole thing to be a week shorter – it’s needlessly gruelling at the moment for everyone, let alone disabled performers.

Why should we come and see the show?

I have a fresh take on stuff, a gripping story, and it’s very funny. Plus, I’m single, if anyone’s looking.

Amy Mason: Free Mason is on at the Pleasance Courtyard from July 31st
