QuickFire Questions: Marissa Landy

The person behind Woodrow talks us through their new show and their exploration of character comedy.

Why did you make this show?

I have been writing and making theatre for years and have always created work that was political or had some form of social change at the root. I love making that work but deep down I have always wanted to make a show that genuinely just brightens people’s days. I have personally had a very tough year with mental health and I only wanted to watch things that could lift me. Woodrow is a character that is made to lift people’s spirits and is my very first time exploring the world of character comedy!

What is the part of the show you’re most proud of?

I’m most proud of the stamina involved in this show. As with all one-person shows, the actor has to work extremely hard. This show is physically and vocally very demanding. It’s also incredibly hard to maintain energy for a solid 45-minute comedy show so, I’m really proud of myself for not making the show easier for myself and pushing it to the max!

As a disabled practitioner, what do you want to see change at The Edinburgh Fringe?

For me, the main thing that I needed more of was quiet spaces or sensory friendly zones. I’m glad that I have been made aware of one such place but I do feel that it would be great to see them all over the city throughout the festival.

Why should we come and see the show?

It’s completely bizarre. I pride myself on writing nonsense and Woodrow does come out with some bonkers things. This show is all about having a giggle with no other motive from me other than to give the audience an hour to really enjoy themselves and watch me be an absolute fool! Woodrow is an absolute sweetie and I’m sure you’ll all fall in love with him.

Woodrow Auditions Live is on at CArts till the 25th August.
