It’s surprising that a subject as immediate as our own potential extinction, (likely due to the imminent climate collapse) isn’t a subject of many more fringe shows. Strange Future’s should be lauded for bringing attention to this; a neurodivergent-led company that has based their work on extensive research.
Matthew Simmonds and William Moore are able performers, energetic and skilled. They show us the journey of animal extinction and how humans are diminished by this disintegration. Although the message behind these scenes are sound, they often come across as crass comedy sketches. This reliance on silliness distracts from the message of the piece, and the sometimes serious and considered writing gets lost. Perhaps Jane George who co-wrote The Endling with the cast could look again at trimming down the densely packed text.
Pete Coxhead and Anthony Steeple’s design works well, with light casting shadow and giving the more dramatic moments depth.
Towards the end of the show, The Endling’s message becomes radical, and does pack a punch. Strange Future’s have the potential for something special and they need to push their message further.
