★★★
Zachary Loram’s DIY musical is a charming and entertaining riposte to the way disabled people are made to present themselves for an audience. Starting with a very silly song about eels (hang on it makes sense later), you’re instantly won over with Loram’s beautiful Broadway-ready singing voice and silly lyrics. His interactions on Zoom with ‘big Hollywood producer lady’ were particularly enjoyable, especially with the home-made style, look out for some very funny details.
Loram’s show is a battle between making a musical he wants (that about eels having sex) and the one others thinks he should, that about being disabled. The opening includes Zachary reading out lines by ‘Mr Review Man’, with the typical cringy lines some reviewers come out with (suddenly feeling very seen). I liked what Zachary was saying with the eel analogy. The song that deftly shows the way we are bombarded with personal questions or ignorant observations about our disabilities, was very accomplished. For all its zippy cleverness and entertaining satire, it’s over all too soon.
Zac Zac Zoom: A Story of Wheels and (F)eels is on at The Space at Surgeon’s Hall until August 24th
