Let’s Get Friz Frizzle (To The Tune of Let’s Get Physical)

★★★★★

From the opening refrains of Friz Frizzle’s titular song, we know we are going to be in for a treat of an hour. Frizzle’s persona is detail-oriented, interrupting their own parody musical numbers with asides, footnotes and deft humour that seems effortless yet has the confidence of a seasoned entertainer.

We are treated to Elton John impressions, Disney rip-offs (with the cleverest use of deconstructing Marvel I’ve ever heard) and a memory that can recall every quote from The Simpsons.

Beyond the broad appeal of their parodies, Frizzle peppers the songs with deep insights into being autistic, their mental health and being non-binary. It’s great to see such representation, and it is done with real authenticity and vulnerability, which is completely disarming to an audience wanting silly medleys, but such a bold move works to Frizzle’s advantage. They are not just a keyboard tinkler, they are a real person with depth and foibles, and with something important to say.

Frizzle’s own sledgehammer take on musical parody at the fringe is hilarious as it is truthful ’95% is a guy with a ukulele and it’s shit’, luckily Frizzle is in the 5% that’s excellent at it!
